There\u00a0has always been\u00a0an argument in the Scientific world \u2013 Whether an Intelligence\u00a0created this World or,\u00a0the World led to the creation of Intelligence.\u00a0Sounds like a Chicken\u00a0& Egg situation there! However in Hindu Cosmology, the process of creation\u00a0is more purposeful than a random explosion in nothingness.<\/div>\n

In the current\u00a0post, I\u2019m gonna share the\u00a0Creation Phenomenon<\/b>\u00a0as\u00a0per Hindu Scriptures and will take you through the Theological\u00a0as well as Evolutionary\u00a0details hidden in them.\u00a0Swami Vivekananda<\/b><\/a>, one of the most intellectual proponents of Hinduism\u00a0says \u2013 Indian philosophy goes beyond both Intelligence as well as\u00a0Matter and describes a Purush, or Self, of whom Intelligence is but the borrowed light \u2013 This\u00a0Adi-Purush<\/i><\/b>\u00a0or Original Being is the\u00a0Supreme\u00a0<\/i><\/b>Lord Vishnu<\/b><\/a>.<\/p>\n

We saw in the\u00a0first post\u00a0{A for Astronomy<\/b><\/a>} that there exist two different Realms in this Creation \u2013 Spiritual and Material. While\u00a0Spiritual Realm<\/b>\u00a0is the abode of pure souls living\u00a0on the Vaikunth\u00a0Planets, the materialistic souls (like You & Me)\u00a0take birth\u00a0on different planets\u00a0in different\u00a0galaxies of different Universes of the\u00a0Material Realm<\/b>.<\/p>\n
There is one important concept that we need to understand here \u2013 According to the Satvata Tantra,\u00a0 there exist, not One, not Two, but THREE different forms of Lord Vishnu in the Material Realm.<\/p>\n
The Three Forms of Lord Vishnu<\/u><\/b><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n\n

The first and foremost\u00a0form of\u00a0Lord Vishnu in the Material Realm, is that of\u00a0 Shri Karanodak-shayi Maha Vishnu<\/b><\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0Narayan<\/b>\u00a0(One-who-lies-on-Water). The Lord\u00a0reclines\u00a0on Cosmic waters of\u00a0 the Causal Ocean (That-Causes-Everything) known as\u00a0Karan-Odak<\/i><\/b>\u00a0that\u00a0emanates from His own body\u00a0and fills the lower half of the Material Realm.<\/div>\n

Shri Maha Vishnu<\/b>\u00a0is the\u00a0ONLY Living entity present in the Material Creation right now and this form of the Lord\u00a0has been called\u00a0Kaal-Swabhavah\u00a0<\/i><\/b>or the foundation of the Space-Time Continuum. He\u00a0forms the basis\u00a0of Quantum Physics that\u00a0runs this\u00a0Universe at Sub-Atomic as well as Super-Galactic levels.<\/p>\n
The as yet\u00a0unmanifest stage of material nature is\u00a0called\u00a0Pradhan\u00a0<\/b>or\u00a0Prakriti<\/b>\u00a0\u2013 till this stage, there is no Words or Expression, no Mind or Elements, and the three modes of Goodness, Passion and Ignorance are in an equilibrium. There is no Life or Intelligence, no Pleasures\u00a0or Pains and no Demons\u00a0or Gods. There is no Ether, Water, Earth, Air, fire or Sun nor the different stages of Consciousness \u2013 sleep, wakefulness and deep sleep. Yet,\u00a0this\u00a0Pradhan<\/i><\/b>\u00a0is the original substance of Material Nature and\u00a0the basis of all further Creation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Creation Begins\u00a0in the\u00a0Material Realm<\/u><\/b><\/h4>\n
\n
1. The First Step in Creation is\u00a0called the\u00a0FIRST Sarga:<\/b><\/p>\n
Because of the\u00a0Wish of\u00a0Maha Vishnu<\/b>, there arises a disturbance in equilibrium of the 3 qualities of\u00a0Satva, Rajas<\/i><\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0Tamas<\/i><\/b>\u00a0which results in the formation of subtle imperceptible matter\u00a0called the\u00a0Mahat Tattva<\/b><\/a>. This subtle matter can not be perceived by our material senses yet it forms the basis of all that follows \u2013 It is from thisthat\u00a0Intelligence or\u00a0\u2018Buddhi\u2019\u00a0<\/i>arises further giving rise to\u2018Aham\u2019<\/i><\/b>\u00a0or Ego that further gives rise to\u00a0\u2018<\/i>Manas<\/i><\/b>\u2019\u00a0<\/i>or Mind.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
2. In the\u00a0SECOND Sarga<\/b>,\u00a0the Mind gives rise to the\u00a0Dash-Indriyan<\/b><\/i>\u00a0which include 5 Sensory Perceptions \u2013 Ears, Skin, Eyes, Tongue and Nose as well as 5 Organs of Action \u2013 Mouth, Arms, Legs, Excretory and Reproductory.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
3. The\u00a0THIRD Sarga<\/b>\u00a0shows the formation of the FIVE\u00a0Tanmatras<\/b><\/i>\u00a0or subtle elements of Sound, Touch, Taste, Form & Smell followed by the\u00a0Basic Elements, the\u00a0Panch-Mahabhoot<\/a><\/b>\u00a0which, like the three Primary colors, give rise to Matter in its\u00a0various forms through their permutations and combinations. These Famous Five are \u2013 Space, Air, Water, Fire & Earth.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
These\u00a0THREE Phases of Creation are collectively are known as\u00a0PRAKRITIK Sarga<\/b>\u00a0as they are NOT a creation of Brahma and come into\u00a0being\u00a0from the Natural\u00a0Energy of the Lord,\u00a0known as\u00a0Prakriti<\/b><\/a>. After these basic building blocks, the stage was now set for the creation of our Universe (and indeed other Universes too!). Before we move ahead just a quick tabular shot of what we have learnt above:<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

All this detail may be too much to handle in the first instance but if you have managed to grasp the above, feel relieved for the difficult conceptual portion is out of the way :o)<\/div>\n

Creation of Our Universe<\/u><\/b><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
As we learnt in the previous post, Multiple Universes emergefrom the\u00a0Infinite pores ofShri Maha Vishnu\u2019s<\/b>\u00a0cosmic body each time He exhales.\u00a0The Lord\u00a0again enters EACH of these\u00a0egg-shaped\u00a0Universes\u00a0in His\u00a0SECOND form of\u00a0Shri Garbhodak-shayi Vishnu<\/b><\/a>.<\/div>\n
This second form of the Lord\u00a0reclines on the Great Serpent\u00a0Anant<\/b>\u00a0(Without-an-End) and is the Maintainer for His respective Universe. To use an analogy, consider Him sort\u00a0of\u00a0a Governor\u00a0for His Province while Maha-Vishnu is like the Head of the Nation! This particular form of the Lord is also\u00a0known as\u00a0Hiranyagarbha<\/b>\u00a0(Born-of-The-Golden-Egg) because He takes shape inside the Universal Egg or\u00a0Brahmand<\/i><\/b>.<\/div>\n

After a period of 1000 Maha-Yugas,\u00a0a lotus bud\u00a0emerges from the navel of the Lord, inside which is\u00a0 Brahma or Ka<\/b><\/a>, the First MORTAL Being\u00a0in each Universe. The stem of this cosmic\u00a0lotus\u00a0connecting Brahma to the Navel of the Lord, signifies the\u00a0Umbilical Cord<\/i><\/b>\u00a0that binds a baby to its mother. In a sense, Lord Garbhodak-shayi Vishnu is the Father as well as Mother of ALL creation beginning first and foremost with Lord Brahma.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Imagine the plight of the Creator-god when he would have opened his eyes for the first time.. He must have been\u00a0as lost and clueless as\u00a0a new born baby\u00a0coming into\u00a0this world!\u00a0Lord Brahma<\/b>\u00a0did not know the purpose of his being. Trying to look all around him simultaneously, he sprouted\u00a05 heads to enable him to spot\u00a0even a hint of an\u00a0activity\u00a0in any direction yet could not see anything except darkness all around him.<\/p>\n
To clear his confusion,\u00a0he then\u00a0decided to explore the stem of the Lotus from which he had emerged but came to a dead-end. Thereafter, he\u00a0went into meditation\u00a0for a 100 Maha-Yugas and to clear his confusion and provide him guidance,\u00a0Lord Garbhodak-shayi Vishnu<\/b>\u00a0made Himself VISIBLE to Brahma.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Lord Brahma was transfixed with the\u00a0divine spectacle of the Supreme Lord resplendent in Blue and Gold, lying on the Great serpent with a thousand hoods\u00a0on the mighty waters of the\u00a0Garbh<\/i><\/b>-Ocean!\u00a0Shri Hari Vishnu<\/b>, then told Brahma his purpose of existence and realizing the magnitude of work that lay ahead of him, Brahma was (quite understandably) left speechless! It\u2019s sort of like being asked by the Boss to create a new Business Model when you dont even know which industry you are working in :o)<\/p>\n
Fortunately, the BIG-BOSS here was Lord Vishnu, the\u00a0Adi-Purush<\/i><\/b>\u00a0who in the noblest of sacrifices asked Brahma to use portions of Lord\u2019s\u00a0own body for beginning the process! It is from here that actual Creation by\u00a0Lord Brahma<\/a><\/b> begins.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Creation within EACH Universe<\/u><\/b><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n

\n
\n
\n
We\u00a0FINALLY begin with\u00a0the Creation of our Universe. To give it\u00a0some perspective,\u00a0I should\u00a0inform\u00a0you that my calculations give the staggering number of\u00a0155.524752 Trillion Solar Years<\/b>\u00a0ago as the time of occurrence of\u00a0this event!<\/p>\n
Another point to be noted here,\u00a0is\u00a0that EACH Universe has a personal form of Lord Vishnu\u00a0AND an Individual Brahma as well. Ergo, there are billions and billions of Brahmas in the Material Realm\u00a0each taking care of Creation in his\u00a0OWN Universe!!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

4. Brahma first creates the Immovable objects such as Planets, Land, Mountains,\u00a0etc. which do not have any inherent power of Motion\u00a0(Remember that Planets also move due to Gravity and do not have an intrinsic motion of their own).\u00a0This is the FOURTH phase of Creation known as the\u00a0Mukhya<\/b>\u00a0Sarga<\/b>.<\/div>\n
5.\u00a0In the next phase called the\u00a0Tiryak Sarga<\/b>, Brahma\u00a0creates 6 different types of\u00a0Vegetation<\/b>\u00a0covering trees\/herbs\/creepers etc., 12 different varieties of Birds and 28 different broad classifications of\u00a0Animals<\/b>\u00a0which I\u2019m not detailing here to prevent a system overload and subsequent crash ;o)<\/p>\n
6. The\u00a0SIXTH Phase saw Creation of Demigods and other Advanced Species\u00a0of life and is therefore\u00a0known as the\u00a0Deva Sarga<\/b>.\u00a0<\/i><\/b>Most important Divinities were created in this Phase of Brahma\u2019s Creation.<\/div>\n

First come the\u00a04 Eternal Kumars<\/b><\/a>, the First Incarnations of Lord Vishnu. These cherubic kids remain the same in appearance\u00a0throughout their lifetime which is as long as that of Brahma himself! But all of them chose to follow the path of Spirituality instead of following Brahma\u2019s command for beginning procreation.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n

\n
This frustrated Brahma so much that from his forehead, (the region of the third eye) emerged a dark red and blue child bawling at the top of his voice! This crying baby was named\u00a0 Rudra<\/b><\/a>\u00a0(The Howler)!<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
<\/div>\n
However, Rudra too decided to follow the path of\u00a0Tapas<\/b><\/i>\u00a0or Penance and\u00a0Brahma was\u00a0sorely disappointed. After a lot of cajoling by Brahma, Rudra agreed to help and manifested\u00a010 more beings with the same appearance as him (Binary Fission?!?). These\u00a0are known as\u00a0the 11 Rudras,\u00a0ONE of whom is Lord\u00a0Shiva<\/b><\/a>.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n

On Brahma\u2019s request again, Rudra appeared as\u00a0 Ardhanarishwar<\/b><\/a>\u00a0and generated a female principle (Asexual Reproduction??) which was the\u00a0Rudrani<\/i><\/b>.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n

Each of the\u00a0 11 Rudras<\/b><\/a>\u00a0similarly obtained a consort thus providing\u00a0Brahma some satisfaction\u00a0of seeing his creations multiply. However, the Rudras were all fierce since they represented the Supreme Lord\u2019s power of Destruction!<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Realizing that the progeny of Rudra was not what he really wanted to populate the world with, Brahma then created\u00a0 10 Manas Putras<\/b><\/a>\u00a0by just visualizing them in his mind! Neat, eh? I wish I could finish all my work by just thinking about it!! These Mind-born sons of Brahma\u00a0are\u00a0\u2013\u00a0Atri, Angiras, Atharva, Bhrigu, Daksh, Marichi, Pulah, Pulatsya, Vasishtha<\/i><\/b>\u00a0and the youngest one\u00a0Narad<\/i><\/b>.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

When all these sons preferred to follow footsteps of\u00a0the Kumars, by\u00a0refusing to get entangled in the process of procreation,\u00a0Brahma again filled up with\u00a0Negative energy \u2013 this\u00a0resulted in the creation of\u00a0 Asurs<\/b><\/a>, who in common parlance are known as\u00a0Demons. When Brahma let go of this\u00a0Tamsik<\/i><\/b>\u00a0Dark aspect of his being, it resulted in the creation of Night-time.<\/li>\n
Focusing his positive energy again, Brahma took a\u00a0Satvik<\/i><\/b>\u00a0form\u00a0and created the Deities or\u00a0Devas<\/b><\/a>.\u00a0These are the illumined effulgent demi-gods who became the care-takers of different aspects of the Material Creation.\u00a0This Bright aspect of Brahma\u2019s\u00a0personality also led to the creation of Day-time.<\/li>\n

The next creation of Brahma was the\u00a0 Pitras<\/b><\/a>\u00a0or Manes. It may be worthwhile to mention that the planet of the Pitras has one day and night equal to a fortnight each\u00a0of the humans.\u00a0(In a later post I\u2019ll discuss how this relates to\u00a0Einstein\u2019s Theory of Relativity<\/i><\/b>)<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n

Brahma now\u00a0manifested\u00a0other divinities such as the Goddesses\u00a0 Saraswati<\/b><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Gayatri<\/b><\/a>; the Four\u00a0Vedas<\/b><\/a>; the goddess of deliveries\u00a0Prasuti<\/b><\/i>; elements such as Emotions, Music\u00a0and\u00a0Rishi<\/i><\/b>\u00a0Kardama (Ka<\/b>\u2018s Shadow).<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n

Prasuti<\/b>\u00a0became the consort of the eldest Mana-putra\u00a0Daksh<\/b><\/a>,\u00a0and this is where Copulative creation began! It\u00a0is interesting to note that the Sanskrit word for parturient labour is also\u00a0Prasuti<\/i><\/b>, probably a recognition of her being the FIRST woman to give birth to a child by normal delivery!!<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

Thus, Daksha became the Second\u00a0 Prajapati\u00a0<\/b><\/a>after Brahma; the Guardian and Custodian of All Creation. With this, the\u00a0Deva Sarga<\/i><\/b>\u00a0came to a close and Lord\u00a0Brahma, who must have been completely exhausted by now, decided to take\u00a0a break. The point to be remembered here is that like the Greek Titans, the Asuras are older than the Devas who correspond quite well to the Olympians.<\/p>\n
7. At the end of all this, Lord\u00a0Brahma sat ruminating about the direction his work had taken till now, and took a body which was\u00a0Rajsik\u00a0<\/i><\/b>or in the Mode-of-Passion. Thus from his right hand emerged a creature a lot\u00a0like him \u2013 this was the First Man,\u00a0Swayambhu Manu<\/b><\/a>\u00a0(Born-on-his-Own) who was born with the\u00a0Kaya<\/i><\/b>\u00a0of his father Brahma (Ka<\/b>-Brahma,\u00a0ya<\/b>-form). Interestingly,\u00a0the same incident is noted in\u00a0Bible<\/b><\/a>\u00a0as well\u00a0\u2013\u00a0\u2018Man was created in the Image of His Maker\u2019.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Along with Manu,\u00a0emerged the female\u00a0Shatrupa<\/b>\u00a0and Brahma assigned for them the planet Earth.\u00a0Thus, Human-beings, the progeny of Manu and Shatrupa were given the sanction for populating the globe and till date we show ABSOLUTELY no sign of stopping! ;o)<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

In this context, I wanna mention the beautiful similarity drawn by the character called Agent Smith in the super-hit movie\u00a0 Matrix<\/b><\/a>, where he tells Neo\u00a0\u2013 Humans are like viruses.. multiplying till\u00a0they exhaust all resources of a particular place and then moving on to greener pastures..<\/i>\u00a0Guess we and viruses have the same level of Evolution then!<\/p>\n
It is also\u00a0interesting to note that the Germanic tribes\u00a0call their ancestor\u00a0Mannus<\/b><\/i>\u00a0which\u00a0is also\u00a0the root of the English word \u2013\u00a0Man<\/i><\/b>\u00a0just as Manu is the root of the\u00a0Hindi word\u00a0Manushya.\u00a0<\/i><\/b>Since the SEVENTH Phase\u00a0saw the creation of Human-beings, it\u00a0is\u00a0known as the\u00a0Manushya\u00a0Sarga.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
8. In the EIGHTH Phase called the\u00a0Anugrah Sarga<\/b>, other species with magical powers were created\u00a0such as the\u00a0Yakshas, Gandharvs, Sarpas, Apsaras<\/i><\/b>\u00a0etc.\u00a0Some of these species are in the mode of goodness while others in the mode of darkness.9. The NINTH and FINAL Phase of Brahma\u2019s Creation is\u00a0called the\u00a0Kaumar Sarga<\/b>\u00a0wherein the four Eternal Kumars considered re-appeared in this day of Brahma. With this ends the exhausting process of\u00a0Creation<\/b>. If you as a reader and me as a chronicler are both boggled by the details and technicalities of this, imagine the condition of Lord Brahma!\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Yet,\u00a0in my personal opinion, it would be a golden opportunity for any artist to\u00a0get the freedom to express\u00a0his creativity without any restraints, utilizing\u00a0no less than the\u00a0sublime form\u00a0of\u00a0Adi-Purush<\/b><\/a>\u00a0Himself!! How noble the Sacrifice and how Liberating the experience!It would be worthwhile to note that the\u00a04 Kumars<\/b>\u00a0as well as the\u00a010 Manas Putras<\/b>\u00a0are older\u00a0than the Devas and Asurs both, therefore, they are held in deep respect by both the clans. Also, I can\u2019t help but notice that Brahma\u2019s Creation closely follows actual appearance of elements in\u00a0our Universe \u2013\n
First to appear are\u00a0the intangible\u00a0elements like the protons, neutrons etc. followed by\u00a0 matter in\u00a0gaseous form;\u00a0followed by\u00a0the immovable planets and landmasses; then the\u00a0vegetation; birds, aquatics and animals; and finally the Higher species.<\/b><\/p>\n
\n
Also, the\u00a0Mode of reproductionis clearly ASEXUAL in the beginning (as seen with the generation of\u00a0Rudras<\/b><\/i>and\u00a0Rudranis<\/b>)\u00a0<\/i>and becomes\u00a0COPULATIVE only\u00a0after the germination of\u00a0Daksha<\/b><\/i>\u00a0and his consort\u00a0Prasuti!<\/b><\/i><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
Before winding up, let me just mention the Third and the\u00a0Final\u00a0form of Lord Vishnu in the Material Realm. This is\u00a0 Shri Kshirodak-shayi Vishnu<\/b><\/a>\u00a0present in each atom of the creation as\u00a0\u2018Parmatma\u2019<\/i><\/b>or the Super-soul. His vehicle is the Golden-eagle\u00a0Garuda<\/b><\/a>\u00a0and it is from Him that all the\u00a0Avatars<\/b><\/a>\u00a0take origin! The Lord resides on\u00a0planet\u00a0Shvet-dvip<\/i><\/b>\u00a0in the\u00a0Dhruv-Loka<\/i><\/b>, reclining on the\u00a0Sheshnaag<\/i><\/b>\u00a0(One-that-remains)\u00a0with His consort\u00a0Lakshmi<\/b><\/a>\u00a0and supervises this ENTIRE Creation\u00a0that we discussed above!<\/p><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n
There are many more complexities involved in the Creation Process but I hope I was able to make\u00a0it simple enough for your understanding! I\u2019m gonna\u00a0conclude\u00a0this post with\u00a0the verses of\u00a0Purush Sukta<\/b><\/a>,\u00a0that extoll the Supreme Sacrifice of the Adi-Purush that resulted in the commencement of Creation:<\/p>\n

\nBeasts of forest were thus born,<\/i><\/div>\n
